Alemite was founded in 1912 by John Sterling Gollburg, a Swedish immigrant and inventor working in the United States. In 1916 his son Arthur invented the high-pressure grease fitting and gun system that gave the brand its name. Until then, machines were oiled by hand through oil cups. Pressure greasing made lubrication faster, cleaner and far more reliable.
The idea spread quickly. The US Army adopted the system as standard equipment in 1918, and in 1926 the Alemite-Zerk fitting became standard on Farmall tractors. Today Alemite is part of SKF and still stands for workshop-proven greasing equipment.
